The evils of tyranny are rarely seen but by him who resist it.

-John Hay

On Sunday, December 14th, 2008 an email sent to “comments@whitehouse.gov” began:

Dear Secret Service: I am writing to inform you that in the near future, I will kill the President of the United States of America. My primary motivation for doing so is that he is the leader of the most dangerous criminal organization in the world – namely, the United States Government.

The following day men with guns entered a Boulder, CO office and questioned 28-year old Nathan Larson, a software developer with a B.S. in Management from George Mason University who just months prior had campaigned for congressional office in Virginia.

Because he did not apologize for the text sent, Nathan was deemed “a danger to the community” and was kidnapped, transported and caged. Five months later he plead guilty to “threatening to take the life of and to inflict bodily harm upon, the president of the united states.”

Though released in February of 2010, Nathan is again being held against his will – this time because he didn’t obey his captors. In a letter to his “probation officer” he wrote:

I have decided not to comply with my conditions of supervised release anymore. The United States Government has no rightful claim to jurisdiction over me, and I am not morally bound to obey any of its laws of officers. In throwing off my yoke I am exercising the right of individual sovereignty to which I am entitled under natural law.

Nathan is now scheduled to be released in May of 2012. Please do write him if you’re so-inclined:

Nathan Larson, 36054-013
FCC Petersburg Medium
Federal Correctional Institution
P.O. Box 1000
Petersburg, VA 23804

Some may claim Nathan’s actions extreme, but aren’t the real extremists those who believe they have the right to do things that would rightly be considered wrong and immoral if done by me or you?

Bad ideas have bad consequences and the belief in arbitrary authority is a very bad idea. As pointed out by Larken Rose in The Greatest Superstition:

The superstition of ‘”authority” affects the perceptions and actions of different people in different ways, whether it be the “lawmakers” who imagine themselves to have the right to rule, the “law enforcers” who imagine themselves to have the right and obligation to enforce the commands of the “lawmakers” the subjects who imagine themselves the moral duty to obey, or mere spectators looking on as neutral observers. The effect of the belief in “authority” on these various groups, when taken together, leads to a degree of oppression, injustice, theft and murder which simply could not and would not otherwise exist. . . If the one being controlled does not perceive the control to be legitimate, then the controller is not viewed as “authority” but is seen simply as a bully or a thug.

Further, as Rose Wilder Lane penned almost seven decades ago in The Discovery of Freedom:

So long as any large group of persons, anywhere on this earth, believe the ancient superstition that some Authority is responsible for their welfare, they will set up some image of that Authority and try to obey it. And the result will be poverty and war.

The sooner each of us stops blindly granting others authority and advocate instead for self-ownership (individual liberty coupled with personal responsibility) the sooner Nathan and others like him will stop being victimized by those who believe text on paper or a piece of metal on their chest supersedes natural rights.

In December of 2008 Nathan Larson sent the text below to “comments@whitehouse.gov” Originally posted at Libertapedia.org, the text (inaccessible on that site) is posted here for posterity sake.

——————-

Dear Secret Service: I am writing to inform you that in the near future, I will kill the President of the United States of America.

My primary motivation for doing so is that he is the leader of the largest and most dangerous criminal organization in the world — namely, the United States Government. Among the many unlawful activities it engages in is a nationwide protection racket, in which it extorts money from non-consenting citizens, in exchange for “protection” from aggression. If a citizen refuses to pay, then the government itself commits aggression against him, either by stealing his property; kidnapping and falsely imprisoning him; or killing him if he attempts to use weapons to resist.

The criminal organization justifies these shakedowns partly by saying that the majority of voters have indicated their support for the leaders implementing the extortion; and therefore, bearing the imprimatur of the democratic process, such theft is legitimate. This might be true, if all personal property (such as land and incomes) were held in common, with each member of the electorate being a joint owner having an equal right to decide how it shall be disposed of. But property is not held in common, unless the owner has consented to such an arrangement. If I make an agreement with my employer for a certain wage, and fulfill my obligations, then I have a right to the full amount, not just whatever is left after some criminal gang takes its cut. And if I own land, then I have a right to enjoy it without paying rent to the government in the form of “property taxes,” nonpayment of which will result in repossession. Stealing is a criminal act, whether it has the support of one person or a million people.

The government’s thefts are not only immoral, but unnecessary. In the absence of taxpayer-funded police, courts, and defense agencies, citizens and businesses would hire private police, arbitrators, and private defense agencies to provide protection and dispute resolution. These firms, being unburdened by the red tape and dysfunctional bureaucracies that accompany government, would be more efficient and effective than government agencies. Abolishing the government’s compulsory monopoly will allow a competitive marketplace for these services to emerge, resulting in lower prices and better quality. The same goes for other vital services, such as transportation, education, and health care. (If you want a good picture of what government-run universal health care will be like, by the way, check out the quality of the hospitals run by the Department of Veterans Affairs.)

Government regulation must also be ended, since it constitutes an infringement of our freedom. Laws supposedly intended to protect workers, such as the minimum wage, actually hurt the poor by pricing them out of the labor market. The government red tape required to operate a business also creates barriers to entrepreneurialism. Regulation of various professions (including mandatory licensures) reduces the number of available professionals, causing the price of important services (such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.) to rise. Immigration restrictions are violating the rights of employers to invite whomever they want onto their property; and in doing so, are hampering the ability of U.S. firms to compete against low-wage countries such as China in the global economy. Regulation accounts for much of the reason why we are entering a recession, and why millions of Americans are unemployed or underemployed. Everyone should be allowed to negotiate whatever contracts they want for purchase or sale of goods and services, without government interference.

Perhaps most disturbing, the government is also steadily chipping away at the right of citizens to bear arms, the whole point of which is to enable them to fight back against an oppressive government. Once the people are disarmed, they will be able to offer no further meaningful resistance. Thus, this is the now-or-never tipping point at which it becomes essential to take up arms against the government.

People often say that it would be better to try to change the system through the political process, rather than resorting to assassination. Unfortunately, the prospects for peaceful reform are dim. The main reason is that most of the intellectuals, who might otherwise form a nucleus of dissent, have been bought off or indoctrinated. The lure of a lucrative, stable and prestigious job in academia, government or government contracting draws many intellectuals to these fields. In those roles, they are hardly in a position to go around questioning the merits of government’s existence. That would be biting the hand that feeds them. Instead, they use their posts in the state bureaucracy (including the public education system) to help indoctrinate new generations of young people into the statist ideology. There are even government positions, such as the Drug Czar, that are specifically tasked with advocating the government’s current policies at taxpayer expense (see 21 U.S.C. § 1703(b)(12), which requires the Drug Czar to “take such actions as necessary to oppose any attempt to legalize” drugs). As one cannabis reform activist pointed out, legalizers are essentially paying to oppose themselves.

The statists also have the benefit of political donations from interest groups seeking to profit from feeding at the public trough. The Medicare drug benefit, farm subsidies, etc. are creating whole new classes of citizens who see themselves as financially dependent on the government’s continued largesse. It is almost impossible for even a well-funded libertarian movement to compete effectively against those who have taxpayer funds at their disposal to indoctrinate and/or buy off the electorate.

While it is immoral to kill someone over a small infraction, such as shoplifting a piece of gum, it is morally acceptable to kill someone who is committing armed robbery. As noted, the government is engaging in such robbery as we speak; therefore, the lives of the individuals responsible are forfeit. It makes sense to target those at the top of the organization, so as to decapitate it and thereby cause as much disruption to its activities as possible.

Accordingly, it would seem that the best solution is to use assassinations to overthrow the United States Government by force, so that an anarcho-capitalist system can take its place. I hope that this essay has convinced you of this merits of this idea. If not, I encourage you to read Murray Rothbard’s For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto; Man, Economy, and State with Power and Market; and The Ethics of Liberty, which lay out the philosophical, legal, economic and historical arguments for anarcho-capitalism in more detail; and also John Ross’ novel, Unintended Consequences, which describes how such an assassination campaign might take place.

The Secret Service has many agents who have physical access to the President and awareness of his schedule and travel routes, and therefore are in a good position to participate in an assassination. If you would like to collaborate on this, please let me know. I am pretty good with precision rifles, and have been practicing hitting prairie dogs at 1,000 yards in varying wind conditions. The President’s head is larger than the average rodent, so with prior knowledge of his route, I should be able to find a position that will enable me to take him out with one clean shot. However, sniping is always easier when you have a spotter. Therefore, if you are able to take off a day from work to help me, it will be much appreciated. Don’t worry, I can provide a spotter scope and ghillie suit, if you don’t have one.

Alternatively, if after reading Rothbard’s books, you’re still not convinced this is a worthy cause, you may feel the need to take action against me. I acknowledge the possibility of this eventuality coming to pass; and if it does, I invite you to come down to my house where we can stage a reenactment of Ruby Ridge, with you playing the role of U.S. Deputy Marshal William Degan. It will be interesting to see how many of you die before you figure out where I’m shooting from.
Barry Raymond
Senior United States Probation Officer
10500 Battlefield Parkway, Suite 100
Manassas, VA 20109

Dear Mr. Raymond:

I have decided not to comply with my conditions of supervised release anymore. The United States Government has no rightful claim to jurisdiction over me, and I am not morally bound to obey any of its laws or officers. In throwing off the federal yoke, I am exercising the right of individual sovereignty to which I am entitled under natural law.

From now on, I will violate federal, state and local laws at will, as long as such violations do not infringe the rights of others. For example, I will possess and use whatever controlled substances I want to possess and use. There is no natural law against doing so; such “offenses” are merely victimless crimes arbitrarily established by the government. I refuse to submit to any more drug tests, because they infringe my privacy rights.

For now on, I will possess firearms, ammunition, destructive devices, and other dangerous weapons whenever I want to. I have a right to protect myself from aggressors, including those who work for the government. If you happen to hear the distinctive sound of the gunfire of a Solothurn S-18/100 20 mm Anti-Tank Cannon emanating from my backyard, as cardboard cutouts of statist federal politicians, federal judges, federal prosecutors, and federal agents become riddled with large, ragged bullet holes, please know that there is nothing amiss; it is just me engaging in target practice.

From now on, I will leave the judicial district whenever I want to. Arbitrary borders drawn by governments have no legitimacy to me. I will come and go as I please.

I will not submit any more probation reports, as they are a pointless waste of time. I will not answer any inquiries or follow any instructions of probation officers. I will not notify any probation officer when I change residence or employment, since that is none of the court’s business.

I will frequent places where controlled substances are illegally sold, used, distributed, and administered whenever I want to frequent those places. I will associate with persons engaged in what the government deems criminal activity and with persons convicted of felonies whenever I want to. I will refrain from helping anyone infringe others’ rights, but I won’t submit to the government’s arbitrary designation of certain people as off-limits.

I will not permit probation officers to visit, or permit confiscation of what such officers may deem “contraband.” Nor will I notify a probation officer if I am arrested or questioned by a law-enforcement officer. Nor will I provide access to any requested financial information. I have no moral obligation to disclose such matters to the court.

I will not participate in a program of mental health treatment. There is no point; it is a complete waste of taxpayer money. I do not have any mental illnesses, so there is nothing for a counselor to treat. I certainly am not going to submit to any involuntary medication, since that constitutes an unwanted intrusion into my body, over which I have sovereign ownership rights.

Lastly, I will use email whenever I want to use email, and without obeying any restrictions or conditions imposed by any probation officer. I have a right to communicate without allowing government officials to be privy to such communications. If there are any other conditions of supervised release I have not mentioned, please know that I have as little intention of obeying those as I do of obeying the ones I have mentioned.

Do not attempt to enforce the judgment of the court. I do not recognize the legitimacy of that judgment. I am also morally entitled to defend myself if anyone tries to lay hands on me, since I have not infringed anyone’s rights. I was convicted of making a threat against the President of the United States. It was a threat I was entitled to make, since defense of others is morally permissible when a government official, or any other criminal, is committing aggression against them through the henchmen under his command. The federal government lacks any rightful authority to arrest people for violating tax laws, drug laws, etc. to which they did not consent to being bound. Federal agents are committing aggression at any given moment at the behest of the President; therefore, at any given moment, anyone has a right to kill, or to threaten to kill, the President.

In view of the overwhelming force that the government can muster for its efforts to infringe the rights of the innocent, I might have decided that it was in my interests to obey the conditions of release. But the court and its officers have too much power. Supervised release is a middle ground between freedom and incarceration, and what is to prevent the court, and/or you, from making it almost as bad as imprisonment? Only your goodwill. But I don’t trust in goodwill, when the person has no incentive to display any such tendency.

You can make it intolerable for me, if you want to; and why wouldn’t you? Those who are attracted to government work tend to be those who are willing to put ethics aside and pursue other priorities. And there are no penalties for a government official who harms the innocent in a way that is authorized by law. Even if you happen to be a reasonably decent person, who is to say that you will be my probation officer for the entire three years? In light of this, I may as well rebel completely, and go back to prison. That way, I stand a chance of leaving the criminal justice system in 2012 rather than in 2013, or beyond.

Sincerely,

Nathan Larson

——————-

Nathan Larson
(address redacted for online posting)

Barry Raymond
Senior United States Probation Officer
10500 Battlefield Parkway, Suite 100
Manassas, VA 20109

Dear Mr. Raymond:

I have sometimes found that when I have gone to court, my verbal statements to police officers have been distorted upon being recited by them in testimony. To avoid such problems, I am writing you a letter. That way, no one will have to rely on memory.

I have decided not to take any more supervised urine screens. The reason is that I regard them as an invasion of privacy. I am willing to submit to a relatively non-intrusive drug test, such as a saliva test or hair test. Because I have been clean for a long time now, I have no reason to worry about a hair test revealing evidence of drug use in the distant past. I am also willing to be completely searched for any items that might be used to adulterate a urine sample, and to then take an unsupervised urine screen. I just do not think it is appropriate that I be forced to urinate in front of someone.

The requirement that supervised releasees take drug tests is one of the leading causes of supervised release revocations. There is some connection between drug use and other crimes, so I can understand the rationale. But that connection is mostly created by the government’s policy of drug prohibition. If drugs were legalized, they would be available relatively cheaply from reputable businesses, which would eliminate a major source of funding for gangs and reduce the need for people to commit crimes to finance their drug habits. After all, how often do you hear of violent street gangs dealing tobacco or alcohol, or of someone stealing car stereos in order to buy cigarettes or beer? To the extent it does happen, it’s mostly the result of government artificially propping up the prices of even those commodities through taxation.

Criminal justice system employees such as yourself, the prosecutor, and the judge, often claim that their hands are tied by the law, and that if an arrestee disagrees with the law that requires his arrest, he should work to change that law. But why don’t you help change the laws? Surely you have more clout than the defendants you deal with. Why not join an organization such as Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, and speak out against the drug laws? People who don’t see the effect of the drug laws often don’t care about changing the laws. But you do see the effects, and are required to participate in causing those effects if you want to keep your job, so you should care, if you have any concern about the consequences of the work you do.

There are bills introduced occasionally to legalize cannabis and other drugs. Probation officers, prosecutors, and judges should get involved in changing the law, perhaps by contacting Congressman Ron Paul and expressing an interest in testifying before Congress in favor of drug reform. Surely the steady parade of drug offenders into the courts and their swelling of the prison population over several decades now, with ever-increasing penalties having no discernible effect on drug use rates, must be evidence that our policies have failed. Is it really worth infringing civil liberties to achieve the results of the drug war? Does anyone care about freedom anymore, or about the rights of political minorities to be free from unjustified invasions of privacy, or has everyone accepted the doctrine that the powers that be can infringe whatever rights they want, as long as they legitimize it by passing a law, and appoint judges who are willing to uphold that law?

I don’t particularly like confrontations, but unfortunately you have put yourself in a position of being required as a condition of employment to enforce whatever laws Congress passes, and whatever orders your superiors give you, regardless of whether or not those laws or orders are just. So, if I am going to exercise my natural right not to take supervised urine screens, which is not a right recognized by law, then perhaps we will end up in conflict with each other. I have little doubt as to who will win in a confrontation between myself and the government, and I have no illusions that anyone on the outside, except for my family and friends, will care when I go to prison. But, oh well. Sometimes it is important to exercise one’s rights anyway, regardless of the consequences, for the sake of one’s own self-respect. We all have our own thresholds of how much government tyranny we’re willing to put up with before rebelling, and I do not judge anyone for having a different threshold.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, but I never consented to be required to take supervised urine screens. I never voted for a politician who favored such a law, I never signed a contract agreeing to be bound by the decisions of the winning candidates in any election, and I never moved into a country that had such a law. Rather, I was born here, and the laws requiring these drug tests were enacted while I was below the age of majority and not allowed to vote. I would leave this country, and go someplace like New Zealand, except for the fact that I’m presently banned from leaving by court order, and banned from entering all or most of the freer countries due to my felony conviction. In view of my lack of choices, can I accurately be said to have consented to this government’s rule?

18 U.S.C. § 3583(d) requires that I submit to a drug test within 15 days of release on supervised release and at least 2 periodic drug tests thereafter. I have met that requirement. You have the power to order more drug tests, but you are not required to by law. If you don’t feel the need to order another supervised urine screen, then we can continue with supervised release. If you do feel the need to do so, then go ahead and call me in so that I can refuse, and we can get this over with. The sooner I begin serving my 24 months in prison, the sooner I’ll be done with the criminal justice system.

I am enclosing the International Paruresis Association’s Drug Testing Reform policy. My paruresis is relatively mild, and lately has been more of an annoyance than a complete hindrance to taking a supervised urine screen, although there were times, on a previous probation term, when it prevented me from producing a usable sample. It is probably a hard disorder to diagnose, since as a phobia, it’s mainly psychological, which makes it difficult to produce evidence of its existence. It’s just another reason to switch to some less intrusive drug testing method.

Sincerely,

Nathan Larson

Kevin Innes, who we noted earlier this month, “has been caged in county jail for the past 21-months for the dastardly act of advocating the use of Liberty Dollars when engaging in voluntary interactions” has a hearing this Friday in Charlotte.

Here are the details according to his spouse Julia Gaunt who asked that we “please consider coming to Charlotte” to support Kevin this Friday at 8:30am sharp for his bond hearing.

For more information check out the update sent last week by Jim Allard, Kevin Innes’ investigator, to Jason Pratt and the related posts linked to below:

Jason,

I just wanted to let you know that Kevin’s case has come to a conclusion.

As you know, he was originally charged with a felony. The prosecutors then offered him a misdemeanor. Just two days ago it was dropped to a “petty offense.” This is punishable by only a fine and does not constitute a “crime.” It is almost as insignificant as a speeding ticket.

Of course Kevin has been in jail because this case impacted his immigration status. They originally wanted to deport him to Canada. Taking the plea offer of a petty offense DOES NOT negatively impact his immigration hearing. In fact it is most likely all will be good for him in that venue.

I wanted to make sure you knew the outcome and I wanted to thank you for your assistance. You were on our witness list and you would have been called to testify in large part because of your experience with the Liberty Dollar and your education. I truly appreciate the time you took to meet
with me in Austin.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Again, many thanks.

This past week PLN announced their exhaustive report that details the bureaucratic kickback structure that has spawned as a result of the warehousing of individuals in cages. According to their press release:

The report, based on several years of research that included submitting public records requests in all 50 states, found that prison phone companies routinely provide kickbacks – euphemistically known as “commissions” – to contracting government agencies, based on a percentage of the revenue earned from prisoners’ phone calls.

These kickbacks, which average 42% of gross revenue, generated over $152 million nationwide in 2007-2008. Since the vast majority of prisoners’ phone calls are paid by their families, either by accepting collect calls or by funding pre-paid or debit accounts, most of the kickback money comes from prisoners’ family members.

According to the Facts page on Prison Phone Justice:

Put into simple terms, up to 60% of the costs of calls from prison has nothing to do with the cost of the phone service provided. So when Mary talks to her husband 40% percent of the cost is for the service and 60% is a kickback to the state government.

Though I’ve never been caged in prison, I have experienced the restrictive access and prohibitive cost of making calls from jail. When my friend Ademo was jailed in Las Vegas there was a $10 fee each time he called out, plus a charge for each minute on the phone. For those caged for longer periods of time (prison entails a sentence of over a year) it only compounds the financial burden to the family on the outside. Not only are they left without the income that that caged person may have contributed (a loss), but merely staying in touch erodes their bottom line (another loss).

Help Prison Phone Justice change the Statist Quo. Make it easier for those caged reach their loved ones, to have better access to legal help and other resources, and to do interviews to share their story with others.
